London M25

M25: Between Gatwick and Heathrow junctions cameras on almost every overhead gantry, one per lane. Look close and you can see the boxes before going under them, these are keyed to the speed restrictions on the lanes and will take pictures at
slower speeds as the speed limit is dropped. On both clockwise and anti-clockwise carraigeways. All UK cameras now have white measuring lines painted on the road in front of them. This is to confirm that the car pictured was speeding, while they are being painted into the road where there are not cameras.. Also look out for the predecessor of cameras and still in use as far as I know, are two large white rectangles, painted on the roads a few hundred yards apart, the police would physically time you between the two marks, as they are a set distance, VASCAR. These are also favorite spots for radar traps. Also, occasionally police still use the two electronic sensors, about a metre apart, tacked to the road. These are mainly just for census purposes, for counting number of cars and their speed as such they tend to herald traffic calming measures If the police try and charge you with speeding using these, get in touch with a good solicitor and he should get you out of it they have been proved hugely inaccurate. For the hooligans out there, they are notoriously fragile and skidding or spinning your wheels on them will almost always stop them from functioning. Finally and this was up to date as of last year, speed cameras in the UK only hold 350 pictures worth of film and have to take two pictures per offender. Also the police only have about one camera per six boxes. This means that while they always flash the chances are that they won't have a camera in, or they will have run out of film. I would guess the M25 ones will be of most use to Americans, being close to the airports, although our higher speed limit means they probably don't fall foul of speeding so much. I don't know what they are set to, but would imagine somewhere between 20 and 30 over the limit. The general rule of thumb is that 10 over the limit is safe (except in built up 30mph areas) 30mph over the limit and above is normally considered as sufficient for a ban from driving for between 1 and 12 months, depending on where you were doing it.The ones on the M25 are the new type - digital, so no film to run out. They are now set to fire even when the ajustable speed limit is switched off, i.e. when the national (70mph) limit applies. They fire at 90mph if this is the case. Drive at 95 (not uncommon here) all the way from Heathrow to Gatwick and you WILL lose your licence! The *ON* cameras can be recognised by the fact they have an aerial on the far left-handside of the gantry (I guess to turn them on remotely). It's not a very big aerial (top of it is just above the height of the blue boarding) so check them out carefully (absolutely no-good in the dark
though, as they haven't put lights on them!!). The top of the aerial has 3 pointy bits (best I can think of) at the very top. The *ON* cameras are on all the time, although they may not have film in they still flash. Seems they activate them when the speed limit is lowered during rush hours.

London (Greater)

A10 : Enfield:They are situated as follows :- (From the M25 down to London)

1. Traffic light Camera at the first set of traffic lights

2. Speed camera at the junction of Turkey Street (1st Road LHS) Beware this is a reverable one and so may be
pointing in the other direction

3. 200 yrds after the Caterhatch Lane junction (sneaky this one it is hiden by a tree

4. A camera is in the other direction (London to M25 Direction)

5. After Lincoln Road junstion (GTE factory on the corner) you will go up a railway bridge. There is a Camera on the left hand side.

6. The is another Camera in exatly the same location on the other direction. Be aware of this one as if you are high speeding you will not see it until it is too late as it is the other side of the bridge

7. A traffic light camera at the Bury Street junstion. (Large school left hand side)

8. Next set of lights (Church Street) there are traffic camera's in both directions

9. speed camera half way between the Church Street and Great Cambridge Roundabout.

10. After the roundabout at the next set of pedestrian crssing is a traffic light camera.

11. about 50 yrds after this a reversible speed camera. Easy to spot in the M25 to London direction but be aware in the other it is slightly hidden by a bush.

12. A pedestrian crossing is next but the camera is a traffic light one but only in the London to M25 direction.

A10 Royston:to Cambridge road. Just past Melbourne fixed Camera.

A12 : (London to Ipswich):Along the 3 lane stretch of the A12 just before Hatfield Peveral they have just mounted 3 speed cameras each about half a mile apart. They don't appear to be working as yet (I came through them at 80 on 4th November 1997 and they didn't trigger), however I believe that they soon will be. If you are coming from the M25 look out for the sign that says Ipswich 37 miles, shortly after this the 3 lane stretch begins. The cameras are the usual reversable type so this also
applies if you are travelling in the opposite direction.

A127 ::(a) when the speed limit goes from 70MPH to 40MPH heading towards Southend, there is a camera at the traffic lights (b) again heading towards Southend, there is a camera at the traffic lights at Kent Elms Corner. (c) heading towards London, there is a camera on the traffic lights after the Kent Elms Corner (there is a BMW dealer on the left) It is rumoured that some of these are both RL and speed traps! There are four visible cameras on the seafront in Southend itself. They appear to be set to just over the speed limit! I've seen these go off when the car appears to be going fairly slow (~33 - ~36 mph) over a stretch
of two miles (two each side) It is rumoured that there is a fifth camera that doesn't look like your standard gatso.

A4 : Osterley:There are a pair of Gatso cameras near Osterley tube station along the A4. On the London-bound carriageway, the camera is located on the pavement before the crest of the hill. On the Heathrow-bound carriageway, it is located just after
the traffic lights. Note that you can trigger the London-bound camera even if travelling towards Heathrow if you are in the overtaking lane (and driving above about 45).

A406 : Brent Cross:On the North Circular, just after Staples Corner there are two speed cameras sitting either side of the Underground bridge at Brent Cross.

A406 : North: There's a camera on the way towards wembley from Brent Cross. Also one in opposite direction. One camera pointing towards Finchley from Bowes road (Easy to see) Mobile Camera at Edmonton roadworks facing towards silver street Eastbound.

London (Central)

A2 : Westbound from the Sun In The Sands roundabout towards the Blackwall Tunnel. 60mph speed limit just entered from a 50mph zone. Camera is on end of slip ramp wall.

Peckham Rye Lane : Heading out of London at the edge of the Rye. Two cameras, one in either direction.

Manchester

A580 Manchester to Liverpool:A lot of Gatso's have appeared on this road some only a couple of hundred metres a part. They are clearly seen and the road now has markings on it as you go over the trap I think there are 4-5 on the way to Liverpool and and 3-4 on the way in to Manchester.

M62 : Major favourite place for marked cars to hide in in the dip at junction 26 (M606 interchange) They love to sit on the hard shoulder of the M62 (both East & West bound), obscured from any distance by the intechange bridges.M62 between Junctions 27 and 30:Due to new A1 / M1 Link Road. 2 Cameras - One Westbound, One Eastbound. The Westbound camera is just after the turn-off for the M1, is hidden behind a bridge pylon, and gets so many people. It's live, as it always, always flashes
twice. Of course there are markings on the road, but by the time you've seen these, it's too late ! The Westbound Camera is directly under the interchange junction with the M1, and is also Live all the time. However, this one is very easy to see, and if you get done by this one, you're asleep, dozy get !

Manchester:There is a traffic lights camera on princess road at the junction of Wilbraham Road. There are often speed traps as you come onto Princess road off the M56 where it drops into a 40 zone. There is a speed camera outside the police station on
the east lancs but I have never seen it go off. There are around 5 speed cameras down the "east lancs" it is a 50 zone and it is best to stick to it down there as there are so many cameras and there is often a cop on one of the bridges with a tripod :( There is a speed camera on the A6 in stockport, it is in the middle of the road and between the TOAD car alarm shop and the ELF petrol station. Does anybody know anything about these little cameras that have poped up all over the place ontop of traffic lights and crossings? some times they have a flash light
next to them and fire a red beam, they are about the size of a can of coke.

Millbrook Road : About half way down the road there are two cameras faced in opposing direction at the major set of traffic lights.

Manchester (Greater)

Merseyside

Coming in from A561Known as the Ford Road (past the Fords Factory) camera locations currently being erectd all the way into the city centre.

A41 : Between Chester and Liverpool Cameras at most main junctions though all are fairly well visible, being large grey boxes at road sign height.

A565 : Liverpool/Southport, on Merseyside: Nasty cameras situated at Crosby traffic lights covering all of the junction and
making plenty of money for those who cross on amber at 32mph.

A580 : Manchester to Liverpool:A lot of Gatso's have appeared on this road some only a couple of hundred metres a part. They are clearly seen and the road now has markings on it as you go over the trap I think there are 4-5 on the way to Liverpool and and 3-4 on the way in to Manchester.

Norfolk

Northamptonshire

Northumberland

A19 : Teesside:Long term roadworks between A174 and Billingham Mobile GATSO (The towed trailer type) with at least 3 sites in each direction Note that on the Tees Bridge where there is an unneccessary 50MPH restriction there is no problem (The limit on the bridge should be 60 as there are no works there) Each site has the road markings down - regular travellers should be able to spot and avoid the camera

A19 : Long-term construction works on the A19, near Middlesbrough, UK, have included warning signs for Gatso cameras for the last two months. Until now, there appeared to be no cameras actually in place to back up the signs. There is one camera at the start of the construction zone on the northbound carriageway. I triggered it while doing an indicated 70 mph through this 50mph zone at 0200 in the morning.

A6079 : Acomb . In the middle of Acomb village there is a speed camera on the south bound side of the road, to get motorists heading south. Speed Limit is 30mph.

A69 Haydon Bridge : Approximately 300 yards in to Haydon Bridge when travelling west you will see a speed camera on the opposite side of the road. This is aimed at motorists heading east. When heading east it is impossible to see the camera, as it is well hidden behind a sign. This is the most vandalised speed camera in the UK. Speed Limit = 30mph.

A689 : On the outskirts of Hartlepool, set on the first lot of traffic lights entering the town, cameras both ways entering and exiting the town, speed limit is supposed to be 50mph. Theres also a lay-by 50 yards after the lights where police cars hide!!
Aylesbury, Bucks: Masses of Gatsos around the ringroad.

Oxfordshire

M40 between M25 and J4:Major road works 50 MPH limit. East bound camera just before M25 junction, west bound just passed junction 2 (Beaconsfield).

A3400 : Between Stratford-on-Avon and Oxford:All are reasonably obvious grey Gatso's - obvious depending on how fast you're going. To my knowledge, there are no GATSO's outside 30mph limits. 1) Enstone - just before 30 limit ends (travelling north), downhill, just before pub. 2) Woodstock - one just into 30mph limit, just before Blenheim palace, travelling north. 3) Also Woodstock - one just before 60mph limit, nearly out of Woodstock (northbound also). Also several into 30 limit just south of Oxford. These move all the time, but have never gone off when keeping around 37mph.

A43 : South of Brackley on single carriageway section next to entrance to Tusmore Estate, near USAF Croughton. This is a 60 mph zone. Camera only catches south bound traffic. A361 In village of Bloxham, south of Banbury. 30 mph zone, camera
can face both ways, but normally set for northbound traffic.

Oxfordshire Traps : Botley road into Oxford city. Gatso (live) Woodstock road into Oxford city. Gatso A415 into Abingdon from A34. Gatso.

Shropshire

Somerset

A358 : Heading towards Taunton. Just before the entrance to the garden centre on the left, partially obscured by a tree.

Staffordshire

A34 : On 1/2 a mile before Trentham Gardens, and one as you enter Tittensor. The Police have a nasty habit of also using mobile speed traps on the A500 both off the bridge of the new A50 and on the Hanford flyover in either direction.

A34 : Dual c/way between Stafford and Stone in national speed limit 2 cameras, both directions.

A34 : Dual c/way north of Stone in 40mph limit 2 cameras, both directions.

A518 Westbound : Approaching Stafford opposite Stafford University just into the 40mph limit. A518 eastbound approaching Stafford near Stafford Castle just into the 30mph limit. A449 Northbound approaching Stafford just into the 30mph limit.

A523 : Ashbourne: Leek Road on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border has recently sprung approximatly 16 GATSO's As this is on of the North West's classic biking roads - Watch it lads !! All the Gatso's are either side of Petrol stations, pubs, or dangerous road junctions. Their locations are approximately (from Leek to Asbourne) :- Less than 1 mile from Leek - either side of the Esso Petrol Station (2) One furthur Gatso in this general area. Two Gatsos in Bottomhouse, either side of the little petrol Station. Two gatsos in the Winkhill 50mph section at a dangerous junction. Two Gatsos in Waterhouses - 30 MPH Section. Two more Gatsos are located about 250m either side of the A52 junction - another dangerous junction where there has been many serious accidents in the past. The final two are located in Swinscoe. All these Gatsos seem resonably placed - and I suspect it will mainly be bikers with decent acceleration that will be unwittingly trapped - but there are a lot of us out there.
